Welcome!

Welcome to the 2009 Scovie Awards Competition, the Official Contest of the Fiery Foods and Barbecue Industry. We are pleased to announce some improvements to the contest.

New Sub-Categories

Based upon the requests of many manufacturers, we are adding the following sub-categories: Low-Carb in the Barbecue Sauce category, Sugar-Free in the Sweet Heat category, Low Sodium Rubs/Seasonings in the Meat Required Cook-It-Up category, and All-Natural in the Barbecue Sauce, Hot Sauce, and the two salsa categories. Apparel has been added to the Marketing and Advertising Division.

Scovie Analysis Reports

After a successful trial run last year, we are continuing the Scovie Analysis Reports. For details, please see the Call for Entries, below.. Please note that these reports are not included with your entries, but must be paid for separately after the judging and release of winners. Contestants found these reports to be very useful in making formulation and marketing decisions regarding their products.

New Payment Methods

In the past, we have required payment by check or credit card that was included with the shipment of tasting or other samples. You can still pay for your entries this way but because of lost packages, breakage causing damaged checks and obscured credit card numbers, we have an additional option -- online form for credit card payment via a secure server.

Payment and Submission Procedure

  1. Read the Call for Entries information, below.

  2. Print out the PDF PDF Entry Form.

  3. Choose the categories you wish to enter and fill out the form completely.

  4. If choosing the online form for credit card payment, go here and follow the instructions.

  5. When payment is completed, print out the payment receipt.

  6. You can then fax the Entry Form and payment receipt to us at 505-877-8579, and/or include both with your shipment of products. The originals or copies must be included with your product shipment to us. Shipping instructions are on the Entry Form.

  7. If you have any questions, email us here or call us at 505-873-8680.

Here’s Why You Should Enter

It happens all the time: manufacturers suddenly begin to get inquiries and orders from buyers they've never heard of before. When they ask how the buyer found out about their products, often the reply is: "We saw that you were a Scovie winner on the Fiery-Foods & Barbecue Super Site." There are so many products available these days that buyers look for unique reasons to favor one brand over another and being a Scovie winner provides a unique distinction that sets your product apart from the others. Even if you've won in past Scovie competitions, there are always benefits to winning again. It is great being a past winner, but being a current winner is better.

All winners receive:

Judging Criteria For Tasting Categories

Product tasting entry scores will be judged for: Appearance, Aroma, Spice Blend, Originality, Flavor (most heavily weighted), and Overall Impression.

The judging panel will be made up of food industry professionals, including executive chefs, restaurant owners, culinary instructors, food writers, and other food industry leaders.

All product sampling will be conducted using fair, impartial, and blind judging standards.

All products entered in the Consumer-Ready Contest will be judged "as is." All products entered in the Cook-It-Up Contest will be prepared by culinary professionals to manufacturers' directions using like ingredients, under controlled supervision.

A category must receive a minimum of five entries to qualify for judging. Contest management reserves the right to create or delete categories based on the number of product entries. If five entries are not received in a subcategory, the remaining products will then be judged in the main product category or combined into a separate category.

There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes available for each category. All staff members of Fiery Foods & BBQ Magazine and Sunbelt Shows, Inc., and Pioneer Communications, Inc. will be excluded from judging. The decision of the judges is final and in no way reflects the opinions of the sponsoring organizations.

A full list of winners will be released to all participants on or before November 15, 2008.

TASTING DISQUALIFICATION STATEMENT

All entries should be correctly canned or sealed according to standard food and health safety procedures. Contest management reserves the right to discard and disqualify any entries that are not properly canned or sealed, according to food and health safety procedures.

How To Submit a Tasting Group Entry

You may enter as many products as you like. If you want to enter the mild, medium, and hot versions of your salsa, you must pay for three separate entries. Products such as nuts, that come in various flavors, must have one entry per flavor. It is permissible to enter the same product in both a tasting category and the Marketing and Advertising Group, but a separate fee is required for each entry.

For each tasting category submission, please send FOUR product samples, along with the appropriate completed entry forms and fees.

Please carefully package all entries, as Fiery Foods & BBQ Magazine cannot be held responsible for any damage incurred during shipping.

We will accept complete entries only (product samples accompanied by entry forms and fees). Please do not attempt to phone, fax, or e-mail entry forms.

Winners agree to allow Fiery Foods & BBQ Magazine use their product name for promotional purposes.

Please see printable Entry Form (PDF format) for categories.

Important Note About Superhot Products

Products containing oleoresin capsicum (extract) may not be entered into the Tasting Group categories and will not be tasted or judged. However, they may be entered into the Marketing and Advertising Group in any appropriate category.
